Coach Pitch / Minor Baseball Realignment

Warwick Little League
Baseball Realignment

Little League defines the “minor” division as follows:

Divisions may be established within the Minor League for “machine pitch,” “coach-pitch” or “player-pitch.” [By local option, a player who is league-age 6 for the current season and has played a year in Tee Ball is eligible to participate in a coach-pitch division.]

Warwick Little League, since spring 2011, has fielded teams in the “coach pitch” and “minors” (aka player pitch) divisions. Prior to 2011, the league was able to field teams in a modified player pitch division, between coach pitch and minors, but due to low participation numbers in the league at the time, the modified division was eliminated.

Due to the renewed interest in our league in recent years, we intend to re-institute the modified player pitch division for the spring 2019 season. Doing so requires a specific number of players registered and drafted by teams in the new divisions. The modified player pitch division will provide much needed additional development to prepare players for the traditional minor division (entirely player pitch), particularly the pitching (and catching) positions as well as the game as a whole.

If we are able to successfully re-institute the modified player pitch division, the following is a brief synopsis of the new divisions:

“A” Division

  • Players ages 6-8 who are new to coach pitch or in need of additional development at this level
  • Coach pitches to the batter
  • 10 players in the field defensively; rotation of positions

    “AA” Division

  • Players ages 9 and below
  • Coach pitches for first two innings, players pitch for remaining innings. Strict rules in place re: pitch counts and days of rest.
  • 9 players in the field defensively; rotation of positions

    “AAA” Division

  • Traditional full player pitch division, with standard LL rules in place regarding pitch counts and days of rest

Tryouts (aka skills assessments) on Saturday, Feb. 9th, and the subsequent team drafts by the managers the following week will determine the division in which your child is placed.
